  14.   Fastgraph Font Factory is a Microsoft Windows 3.1 application designed to
  15.   all you to export TrueType fonts for use with Ted Gruber Software's
  16.   Fastgraph/Fonts.  If you are not using Fastgraph/Fonts, then this
  17.   application will be of very limited use to you.

  29. Installation -
  30.  
  31.   Create a directory and copy all of the distribution files into the new
  32.   sub directory.  From the Windows Program Manager, select a destination
  33.   group (or a create a new group) and press ALT-F.  Select NEW (Item) and
  34.   use the BROWSE function to locate and add FGFF.EXE.  Don't forget to add
  35.   something to the description field; 'Font Factory' is fine.

  38. Differences Between Versions -
  39.  
  40.   Version 1.1 fixed several annoying display problems that occurred when
  41.   using small font displays (i.e. 800*600 small font).  While FGF was
  42.   tested at all video modes, the author was using an out-dated video driver
  43.   and thus introduced display problems into the program.  Version 1.1
  44.   was made available only to registered users.
  45.  
  46.   Version 1.2 introduces dynamic resizing of the two view panels.  You
  47.   now are no longer limited to a small text alignment view window.
  48.   Maximize FGFF, and you'll see <g>.

  50. | Version 1.3 improved dynamix resizing so that the preview window now uses
  51. | all available space on the main window.  Text rotation was added in this
  52. | version and the two text rocker controls have been replaced by a single,
  53. | multi-directional text rocker.  A standard Windows help file was also
  54. | added to the program.

  57. Limitations of the SHAREWARE version -
  58.  
  59.   The shareware version of Fastgraph Font Factory will only allow you to
  60.   load fonts starting with an A, B, or C.  If you want more than the ABC's,
  61.   see REGISTRATION INFORMATION, below.

  64. Program Operation -
  65.  
  66.   Fastgraph Font Factory (hereafter refered to as FGFF) is easy to use.
  67.  
  68.   FONT INFO          This window graphically displays the current font,
  69.                      marking the font cell top, the font's baseline, and
  70.                      the length of the longest descender.  Also displayed
  71.                      is the face name and the current pitch being used.
  72.                      This Window is strictly informative.
  73.  
  74.   OUTPUT PREVIEW     The preview window has two scroll bars and looks like
  75.                      a standard MAKEPCX.PCX file.  This window allows you
  76.                      to examine every cell and make sure that the text is
  77.                      aligned properly.
  78.  
  79.                      HINT: This preview window has a special scrolling
  80.                      feature.  Move the mouse over the control, press and
  81.                      hold the right mouse button.  Now move the pointer.
  82.                      The pointer should change into a hand and the image
  83.                      will scroll as you move the mouse pointer.  Note that
  84.                      you can move the point off of the control, allowing
  85.                      you to scroll great distances quickly.
  86.  
  87.                      Why can't FGFF align the text automatically?  Well, it
  88.                      does.  It determines the length of the largest
  89.                      descender and adjusts all of the text upwards by the
  90.                      correct number of pixels.  The problem is that
  91.                      Fastgraph only needs characters with ASCII values
  92.                      ranging from 32 to 127 while FGFF can only get
  93.                      information about ALL characters in a type face.  It
  94.                      is not uncommon for unused characters to have the longest
  95.                      descenders and as a result you may be able to use the
  96.                      TEXT SHIFT controls (see below) to adjust the text
  97.                      downwards by several pixels.

  99.   SELECT FONT        This allows you to select a new font to work with.
  100.  
  101.   ITALIC             This check box allows you to toggle italics ON and
  102.                      OFF.
  103.  
  104.   BOLD               Using this check box will toggle bold ON and OFF.
  105.  
  106. | TEXT ROCKER        Using this button allows you to adjust both the x-axis
  107. |                    and y-axis of text placement by +/- 1 pixel per click.
  108. |                    The control is multi-directional and can shift text on
  109. |                    both the x and y axis by clicking in the corners of
  110. |                    the text rocker.  You can also reset the text shift by
  111. |                    clicking directly in the center of this control. The
  112. |                    text shift value will be reset whenever a new font is
  113. |                    selected.
  114.  
  115.   SNUG FIT           True Type fonts can actually extend to the left of the
  116.                      placement point.  As a result, FGFF examines each
  117.                      character and adjusts the placement point IF the font
  118.                      extends to the left of the placement point.
  119.  
  120.                      Other characters start several pixels to the right of
  121.                      the placement point.  By default, FGFF does adjust the
  122.                      placement of these characters.
  123.  
  124.                      Selecting the SNUG FIT check box will force FGFF to
  125.                      place all character snuggly against the character
  126.                      cell's left edge.  This is useful if you intend to set
  127.                      a kerning value with MAKEFONT, but probably should be
  128.                      avoided otherwise as Windows generally does an
  129.                      excellent job of kerning the characters.
  130.  
  131.   2X ZOOM            This will zoom the OUTPUT PREVIEW window by a factor
  132.                      of 2.  Keep in mind that is a bitmap zoom, and fonts
  133.                      are displayed as a part of the bitmap and will no
  134.                      longer have as smooth an appearance.  (This will NOT
  135.                      effect the output files.)

  137.   FILE               The file menu (ALT-F) will allow you to save the
  138.                      current typeface to a BMP file by selecting the SAVE
  139.                      AS... option.  Because FGFF currently does not support
  140.                      the PCX format, you'll have to use a 3rd party tool to
  141.                      convert the BMP to a PCX file.
  142.  
  143.                      You can also copy the current typeface to the
  144.                      clipboard, which is the preferred method if you have
  145.                      PAINT SHOP PRO, HIJAK for Windows, or some other
  146.                      image conversion tool.  When converting, be sure to
  147.                      reduce the number of colors to 16 and to disable
  148.                      dithering.

  150.                      Finally, the EXIT option on the file menu allows you
  151.                      to close FGFF.
  152.  
  153.   ABOUT              Provides a little information about FGFF.
  154.  
  155.   SPLITTER-BAR       This is an invisible display control.  If you position
  156.                      the mouse cursor between the two display panels, the
  157.                      mouse cursor will change into a bar.  You can now
  158.                      expand or shrink the size of the display panels.

  161. Using FGFF with Paint Shop Pro -
  162.  
  163.   Paint Shop Pro, a highly-rated shareware program by JASC, Inc, makes
  164.   image conversion a snap.  If you have Paint Shop Pro, here are the steps
  165.   involved in creating a PCX file usable by MAKEFONT.EXE.
  166.  
  167.      1.  In FGFF, copy the image to the clipboard (CTRL-C).
  168.      2.  Switch to or start Paint Shop Pro.
  169.      3.  Select EDIT, Paste (SHIFT-INSERT)
  170.      4.  Select COLORS, Decrease Color Depth, 16 colors.
  171.      5.  Set the Palette to OPTIMIZED and set Reduction Method to
  172.          NEAREST COLOR.  Select OK.  Paint Shop Pro will now convert the
  173.          image.
  174.      6.  Save the file as a type 5 PCX file.
  175.  
  176.   If you keep both FGFF and Paint Shop Pro open, you can toggle back and
  177.   forth between the two applications (ALT-TAB).

  199.   NOTE: FGFF requires VBRUN300.DLL, which was not included in this
  200.         archive due to size considerations.  If you do not have this file,
  201.         most BBS systems make it available as VBRUN300.ZIP or VBRUN.ZIP.

  203.         VBRUN200, and VBRUN300) of the VBRUNxxx.DLL file.

  209.         operation of FGFF.  Do NOT delete this file.

  214. | I'd like to add the ability to save directly to PCX format.  Adding this
  215. | feature depends largely upon the amount of interest shown in the product.

  221.   handling ($5.00 for shipping & handling if you live outside the US or
  222.   Canada).  A registered copy of program will be mailed to you on 3.5
  223.   inch media.  Upgrades to new versions will be available at no cost via
  224.   downloadable update files which will be posted on TGS's DUST DEVIL BBS.
